En febrero de 1978, en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad deMéxico, en la zona de Templo Mayor, unos trabajadores de la Compañía de Luz yFuerza del Centro, por casualidad descubrieron una piedra en forma circular, enla cual se encuentra representada Coyolxauhqui, la diosa mexica de la luna. Elhallazgo fue de suma importancia y trascendencia para la arqueología azteca.
Se representa como una mujer desmembrada por su hermanoHuitziliopochtli, que según la leyenda, salvó a su madre Coatlicue aldescuartizar a su hermana, cortarle la cabeza y arrojándola al cielo… La hijaquería matar a la madre…
Casi cinco años después y para celebrar el descubrimiento deeste monolito que se convirtió en la más importante pieza encontrada en TemploMayor, durante los años 1982, 1983 y 1984 se acuñó esta atractiva moneda decuproníquel de 50 Pesos. Mide 35.00 mm. de diámetro y pesa 19.88 gramos.

tiene el Escudo Nacional y la leyenda “EstadosUnidos Mexicanos”.
En el Reverso

In 1978, archeologists excavating the Templo Mayor found this massive stone disc, ten feet in diameter, depicting the goddess.
The stone disc was made in the 15th century by the Aztecs.
The Coin:
Struck from 1982-84, this Mexican 50 pesos coin features on its reverse the Coyolxauhqui design found on the Aztec stone disc.
On the obverse is the national arms, the left-facing eagle with the snake in its beak.
